Key takeaways
- →FSRA's CE requirement has two separate components: Conduct CE, which is FSRA-accredited, and Professional CE, which isn't FSRA-approved course by course but must still total 10 hours.
- →Conduct CE hours differ by licence class: 5 hours for Level 1 and Level 2 agents, 7 hours for mortgage brokers.
- →Both components are due by March 31, 2026, and only apply to renewals falling in even years — 2026, 2028, 2030, and so on.
- →Professional CE records must be kept for four years after the current cycle — CE completed for the March 31, 2026 deadline needs to be retained until March 31, 2030.
FSRA's continuing education requirement isn't one number — it's two separate components, measured differently, due on the same date, and only required in certain renewal years.
This is the detailed version: what Conduct CE and Professional CE each require, by licence class, the March 31, 2026 deadline, what doesn't count toward either total, and how long the records need to be kept.
01 · What are the two components of FSRA's CE requirement?
FSRA's CE requirement splits into Conduct CE, which is FSRA-accredited coursework, and Professional CE (also called Technical Knowledge CE), which covers broader professional development and is not itself FSRA-approved course by course. Both are required, and both are due on the same date.
02 · How many Conduct CE hours does each licence class need?
Conduct CE hours differ by licence class:
| Licence class | Conduct CE hours required |
|---|---|
| Mortgage Agent Level 1 or Level 2 | 5 hours |
| Mortgage Broker | 7 hours |
Conduct CE for the 2024–2026 cycle is accredited through three providers: Canadian Mortgage Brokers Association—Ontario, Mortgage Professionals Canada, and the Real Estate and Mortgage Institute of Canada — the same three providers approved for the Level 2 course.
03 · What does the 10-hour Professional CE requirement cover?
All licensees — Level 1, Level 2, and broker — must complete 10 hours of Professional CE, on top of their Conduct CE hours. Both requirements share the same window: courses completed between April 1, 2024 and March 31, 2026 count toward the current cycle, with a hard deadline of March 31, 2026.
CE is only required for renewals falling in even years — 2026, 2028, 2030, and so on — not every renewal cycle. For the rest of what a renewal actually involves, see Ontario mortgage agent licence renewal.
04 · What doesn't count toward Professional CE hours?
FSRA excludes several situations from counting toward Professional CE, even if time was spent on them:
- →A course where the required details can't be supplied to FSRA
- →A course registered for but not actually attended
- →Hours claimed for acting as the course instructor
- →Repeating a course without new content
- →A course that was failed
FSRA also lists qualifying subject areas — legal and regulatory matters, ethics, mortgage fraud, client needs analysis, brokerage operations, cybersecurity, and risk management — and explicitly excludes sales techniques, recruiting, office or computer skills, management training, company-specific product training, volunteering, networking, and language courses.
CE hours compete with client hours
Get the hours back CE and files both need.
Fifteen hours of CE on top of a full pipeline is a real scheduling problem. Treadstone's fulfillment associates take on file processing so CE doesn't come out of client-facing time.
05 · How long do CE records need to be kept?
Professional CE records must be retained for four years prior to the current licensing cycle. FSRA's own example: once CE is completed for the March 31, 2026 deadline, it must be retained until March 31, 2030.
At renewal, a criminal record check (called a CRJMC) is only required again if a criminal matter was previously disclosed or FSRA has received information suggesting one — it isn't a standard part of every renewal the way it is for a first-time application.
A Principal Broker tracking this across a team should build it into the same supervision routine covered elsewhere in this pillar, and our CE compliance checklist turns this whole cycle into a working checklist rather than prose. Treadstone's Canadian Mortgage Underwriting Course and our fulfillment work with Canadian mortgage professionals both help free up the hours CE, exams, and file volume all compete for.
