Key takeaways
- →The Mortgage Agent Level 1 course is the single education requirement for a Level 1 licence; FSRA has accredited four providers to teach the same curriculum in different formats.
- →The four approved providers are Mortgage Professionals Canada, the Canadian Mortgage Brokers Association—Ontario, the Real Estate and Mortgage Institute of Canada, and Humber Polytechnic; a French-language option is available separately through FSRA.
- →Every approved program ends in a final examination — passing it is what completes the education requirement, not just attending the classes.
- →You must apply for your licence within two years of finishing an approved program, or the education no longer satisfies FSRA's requirement.
Before a sponsoring brokerage can put your Level 1 application into Licensing Link, FSRA needs to see one thing: proof you passed an approved Mortgage Agent Level 1 education program. There's exactly one course requirement, but four different places you can take it.
Here's what the course covers, how the approved providers actually differ, what the exam involves, and the narrow path that exists if you want to skip the course entirely through education equivalency.
01 · What does the Mortgage Agent Level 1 course actually teach?
Every approved provider builds its course around the same FSRA-set curriculum — the foundational knowledge a licensed Level 1 agent needs to deal in mortgages under supervision, covering the regulatory framework, mortgage products and processes, and the ethical and suitability standards FSRA expects of every licensed agent.
Because the curriculum is standardized, the substance of what you learn doesn't change based on which provider you pick — the format, pace, and price do.
02 · How do the four approved providers differ?
Per FSRA's approved provider list, the Mortgage Agent Level 1 course is offered through Mortgage Professionals Canada, the Canadian Mortgage Brokers Association—Ontario, the Real Estate and Mortgage Institute of Canada, and Humber Polytechnic. Each sets its own delivery format — classroom, online, correspondence, or a combination — and its own tuition; FSRA doesn't set the price.
- →Format: some providers run cohort-based classroom or live-online sessions, others let you move at your own pace.
- →Price: tuition is independent per provider — compare current pricing directly on each provider's site before enrolling.
- →French language: a separate approved French-language course and exam is available — contact FSRA for the current provider.

Course passed. Licence next.
The course gets you licensed — volume gets you a career.
Once you're licensed, Treadstone helps you build a pipeline you can actually service, without adding headcount before you need it.
03 · What happens after you finish the course?
Every approved program includes a final examination — completing the coursework alone doesn't satisfy FSRA's requirement; you need to pass the exam. Once you have, the clock starts on a two-year window: apply for your Level 1 licence within that time, or FSRA no longer recognizes the completed course toward your application. See the full Ontario licensing path for what comes next.
04 · Can prior education or experience replace the course?
In rare cases, yes. FSRA will consider an education equivalency request against its Mortgage Agent Qualifying Standards for applicants who can demonstrate an equivalent combination of education and experience — but the bar is deliberately high. It requires a full submission package, a detailed learning-objective-by-learning-objective assessment, supporting letters from employers and your sponsoring Principal Broker, and FSRA targets roughly 60 days to review a complete package. If refused, you can't reapply for 12 months.
For nearly everyone, taking one of the four approved courses is faster and more predictable than pursuing equivalency.
05 · What comes after passing the course?
You apply for your Level 1 licence through a sponsoring brokerage, and once it's issued, the real work starts — building a client pipeline. That's where Treadstone's fulfillment, marketing, and AI growth stack comes in for newly licensed agents who want to scale without building an in-house team from scratch.
