Anyone working across more than one province, or planning to, eventually needs the actual regulator names, not just the province names. This directory lists all nine active provincial mortgage regulators plus the confirmed absence of a regime in Prince Edward Island and the territories, sourced directly from each regulator's own published pages.

Use it as a reference rather than a one-time read — regulator names, fee schedules, and approved-provider lists change, so always confirm current detail on the regulator's own site before relying on a specific number.

Ontario — Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA)

Licence titles: Mortgage Agent Level 1, Mortgage Agent Level 2, Mortgage Broker. Official site: fsrao.ca. FSRA publishes approved education-program lists (Mortgage Professionals Canada, CMBA-Ontario, REMIC, and Humber Polytechnic for Level 1), exact licence and renewal fees, criminal-record-check requirements, and continuing-education rules directly on its licensing pages.

British Columbia — BC Financial Services Authority (BCFSA)

Current licence title: Submortgage Broker (individual), Mortgage Broker (business). From October 13, 2026, under the Mortgage Services Act: Mortgage Broker (individual), Principal Broker, Mortgage Brokerage. Official site: bcfsa.ca. BCFSA publishes its full fee schedule, MSA transition education requirements and deadlines, and its Legal Update continuing-education course details on its own pages.

Alberta — Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA)

Licence titles: Mortgage Associate, Mortgage Broker. Official site: reca.ca. RECA publishes its current licensing fee schedule, its list of Mortgage Associates Program providers and their reported pass rates, and its mandatory re-licensing education requirements directly on its site.

Québec — Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF)

Licence title: Courtier hypothécaire (Mortgage Broker). Official site: lautorite.qc.ca. The AMF publishes its recognized training providers, exam rules including the three-rewrite policy, its full fee schedule, and its PDU (Professional Development Unit) continuing-education requirements on its site.

Where there's no provincial mortgage licensing regime at all

Prince Edward Island has no mortgage-broker-specific licensing regime — confirm locally before assuming otherwise, since this is inferred from PEI's absence from both the FSRA and Mortgage Broker Regulators' Council of Canada (MBRCC) jurisdiction lists rather than a single directly published PEI statement. The same applies to Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut — none appears in either the FSRA or MBRCC jurisdiction lists, and none of their own government professional-licensing directories lists a mortgage broker category.

Anyone operating in or moving to one of these jurisdictions should confirm current status directly with the relevant territorial or provincial government rather than relying solely on this inference.

What does each regulator typically publish on its own site?

  • Current fee schedules for new licences, renewals, and amendments.
  • Approved-provider or recognized-training-provider lists for pre-licensing education.
  • Continuing-education requirements and cycles.
  • Suitability and background-check requirements.
  • Sponsorship and brokerage-relationship rules.
