Upgrading to broker in New Brunswick: the experience rule, the course, and the exemptions.

Moving from mortgage associate to mortgage broker in New Brunswick isn't just a course — FCNB gates it behind a specific experience window. Here's the 24-of-36-month rule, the Broker Education Program, and who qualifies for an exemption.

Key takeaways

  • A New Brunswick broker applicant must demonstrate at least 24 months of experience as a licensed mortgage associate during the preceding 36-month period before FCNB will consider a broker application.
  • The New Brunswick Mortgage Broker Education Program, delivered online by Mortgage Professionals Canada for $495, requires prior completion of the New Brunswick Mortgage Associate Course.
  • You must apply for the broker licence within three years of successfully completing the education program, and meet continuing education requirements within three months of the licence being issued.
  • Holders of an equivalent broker-level licence from certain other provinces — including Ontario, Alberta, Nova Scotia, and several others — can request an education and experience exemption for a $300 one-time fee.

A licensed mortgage associate who wants to become a principal broker, or supervise other associates, has to become licensed as a mortgage broker — and FCNB doesn't let that happen on education alone. The upgrade is gated behind a specific experience requirement, on top of a broker-level course the New Brunswick Mortgage Associate Course feeds directly into.

Here's exactly what the upgrade requires: the experience window, the education program, the application deadline once you've completed it, and the exemption path available to people already licensed at broker level in another province.

01 · How much experience do you need before applying to become a broker?

FCNB requires a broker applicant to demonstrate at least 24 months of experience as a licensed Mortgage Associate in the brokerage industry, within the preceding 36-month period before the application date. It's a rolling window rather than a simple two-years-and-done count — time spent unlicensed inside that 36-month period doesn't count toward it.

Why the extra 12 months of slack matters: The 24-of-36 structure gives some room for a gap in licensing — a leave, a brokerage change — without resetting the clock entirely, as long as 24 of the most recent 36 months were actually spent licensed as an associate.

02 · What education does the broker upgrade require?

The New Brunswick Mortgage Broker Education Program, delivered online by Mortgage Professionals Canada for $495, is the required course — and completion of the New Brunswick Mortgage Associate Course is a prerequisite before you can take it. Once you've finished the education program, FCNB requires you to apply for the broker licence within three years, and to meet continuing education requirements within three months of the licence actually being issued.

That timeline discipline matters in practice: finish the course, then don't let the sponsoring-brokerage and application steps drift for years afterward.

03 · Can you skip the education and experience requirement through equivalency?

Yes, in two ways. First, FCNB exempts applicants who already hold one of a specific list of equivalent broker-level licences from another jurisdiction: British Columbia's Designated Individual, Alberta's Mortgage Broker, Saskatchewan's Mortgage Broker, Manitoba's Authorized Official, Ontario's Mortgage Broker, Quebec's Mortgage Broker Qualified to Manage an Agency (or the fully qualified real estate broker equivalent), or Nova Scotia's Mortgage Broker.

Second, an applicant without one of those specific equivalent licences can request an education equivalency exemption directly, which requires an up-to-date résumé, a signed letter of support from your current employer, confirmation that you've supervised at least five brokers or associates, confirmation from your brokerage's principal broker, and a $300 one-time exemption fee.

New Brunswick broker upgrade: two paths
PathWhat it requires
Standard path24 of the last 36 months licensed as an associate, plus the $495 Broker Education Program
Equivalent-licence exemptionHold an equivalent broker-level licence from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, or Nova Scotia
Education equivalency requestRésumé, employer letter, proof of supervising 5+ brokers/associates, principal broker confirmation, and a $300 fee

04 · Does upgrading to broker mean opening your own brokerage?

Not automatically. A mortgage broker licence and a mortgage brokerage licence are separate things — the broker licence qualifies an individual to supervise associates and, eventually, act as a principal broker, while the brokerage licence is the corporate-level licence for the business itself. Following the issuance of a mortgage brokerage licence, FCNB requires the designated principal broker to promptly apply for their own mortgage broker licence — so the two often go together for someone starting a brokerage, but a broker licence on its own doesn't require you to run one.
