Is AI a passing trend?

The trend line says durable change. The adoption rate says it hasn't reached most businesses yet. Neither fact cancels the other.

Short answer

The trajectory looks like durable change rather than a fad: Statistics Canada's own survey shows AI use by Canadian businesses has tripled in two years, on a steady climb rather than a spike. But durable doesn't mean universal — most Canadian businesses currently report no plans to adopt it at all, and for the majority the stated reason is that it simply isn't relevant to what they do.

What the trend actually looks like

Statistics Canada’s Canadian Survey on Business Conditions has now tracked this across three comparable quarters: 6.1% of businesses used AI in Q2 2024, 12.2% in Q2 2025, and 19.2% in Q2 2026. As the agency itself puts it: “This proportion has tripled since the second quarter of 2024 (6.1%)”. That is a steady multi-year climb, not the spike-then-collapse shape a genuine fad tends to leave in the data.

The honest counterweight

Set against that, Statistics Canada’s companion survey on future intentions found that in Q3 2025, only 14.5% of businesses planned to start using AI over the following 12 months, while two-thirds (66.7%) of businesses reported no plans and 18.9% were uncertain. Among the businesses with no plans to adopt, 78.1% said AI “was not relevant to the goods or services they currently provide”, and a further 7.6% cited “the view that AI is not yet a mature enough technology”, per the same release. That is not the profile of a technology sweeping every business regardless of fit.

So which is it

Both things are true at once, and that combination is itself the answer. Adoption is concentrated and accelerating in specific sectors — information and cultural industries, finance and insurance, and professional services led at 42.3%, 40.4% and 32.4% respectively in Q2 2026, up from 35.6%, 31.7% and 30.6% a year earlier, per the same StatCan release — while 40.0% of all businesses say AI use “is not relevant to the business”. A fad spreads shallowly everywhere and then fades. What the data actually shows is an uneven, sector-specific climb that keeps compounding where it has already taken hold. See whether you need AI to stay competitive for what that unevenness means for a specific business, or how old artificial intelligence actually is for the longer backstory behind the current wave.

Working out where your business actually sits?

Adoption is uneven by design, not by accident. Sequencing the decision is a strategy question.
